Groundwater exploration is the investigation of underground formations to understand the hydrologic cycle, know the groundwater quality, and identify the nature, number and type of aquifers. The purpose of study is to find out various subsurface strata such as soil layer, weather layer, fractured layer and starting depth of hard rock strata. There are different groundwater exploration methods. Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) - Surface geophysical method is one of the groundwater investigation methods. It is one to provide valuable information regarding the vertical successions of subsurface geo-materials in terms of their individual thicknesses and corresponding resistivity values.
By applying this method the resistance to the flow of an electric current through the subsurface materials is measured at intervals on the ground surface. The resistivity is usually defined as the resistance between opposite phases of a unit cube of the material.
